ADJECTIVES

Tính từ trong tiếng Anh gọi là Adjective.

Tính từ là từ dùng để chỉ tính chất, màu sắc, trạng thái,…

Tính từ được dùng để mô tả tính chất hay cung cấp thêm thông tin cho danh từ.

Để nói : Quyển sách màu đỏ ta nói The book is red.

Trong câu này nhận xét:

red là tính từ chỉ màu sắc.

Động từ chính trong câu là động từ to be. Chúng ta không thể nói The book red mà phải có mặt động từ to be. To be ở đây không cần dịch nghĩa. Nếu dịch sát nghĩa có thể dịch Quyển sách thì đẹp. Thiếu động từ không thể làm thành câu được.

Cũng vậy, ta không thể nói ‘The book on the table’ mà phải nói ‘The book is on the table’ (Quyển sách (thì) ở trên bàn).

Tính từ còn có thể đi kèm với danh từ để bổ nghĩa cho danh từ.

Xét câu này:

This is a red book

(Đây là một quyển sách màu đỏ).

Trong câu này:

This đóng vai trò chủ từ

is là động từ chính trong câu.

a red book là một danh từ. Đây được gọi là một danh từ kép (Compound Noun).

Danh từ kép này gồm có: a là mạo từ của book, red là tính từ đi kèm để mô tả thêm về danh từ (book), book là danh từ chính.

Trong tiếng Anh từ bổ nghĩa cho danh từ luôn đi trước danh từ và sau mạo từ của danh từ đó. Ví dụ:

The red book is on the table.

(Quyển sách màu đỏ ở trên bàn)

That’s a pretty book.

(Đó là một quyển sách đẹp)

Một danh từ có thể có nhiều bổ nghĩa. Ví dụ:

He holds a red beautiful book.

(Anh ta cầm một quyển sách đẹp màu đỏ)

Chữ very thường được dùng với tính từ để chỉ mức độ nhiều của tính chất. Very có nghĩa là rất.

Mary is very pretty.

(Mary rất đẹp)

Computer is very wonderful.

(Máy tính rất tuyệt vời)

This, that còn được dùng như tính từ với nghĩa này, kia. Ví dụ:

This book is very bad.

(Quyển sách này rất tệ)

That red flower isn’t beautiful

(Bông hoa đỏ đó không đẹp)

Khi danh từ là số nhiều this, that viết thành these, those.

Vocabulary

Tính từ chỉ số lượng (adjectives of quantity).

noun + Y : storm – stormy

noun + LY : friend – friendly

noun + FUL : harm – harmful

noun + LESS : care – careless

noun + EN : wood – wooden

noun + OUS : danger – dangerous

noun + ABLE : honour – honourable

noun + SOME : trouble – troublesome

noun + IC : atom – atomic

noun + ED : talent – talented

noun + LIKE : child – childlike

noun + AL : education – educational

noun + AN : republic – republican

noun + CAL : histoty – historical

noun + ISH : child – childish

III. Vị trí và tính chất bổ nghĩa của một Tính từ

Khi bổ nghĩa cho một danh từ, tính từ có hai vị trí đứng, và như thế có hai chức năng ngữ pháp khác nhau:

Tính từ đứng ngay trước danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Người ta gọi trường hợp này tính từ thuộc tính (attributive adjective).

Henry is an honest boy.

He has just bought a new, powerful and very expensive car.

Tính từ đứng sau danh từ mà nó bổ nghĩa. Khi đứng sau, nó được nối với danh từ ấy bằng động từ liên kết (linking verbs). Người ta gọi trường hợp này là tính từ vị ngữ (predicative adjective).

That house is new.

She looks tired and thirsty.

Phần lớn các tính từ chỉ tính chất đều có thể dùng như một tính từ thuộc tính (attributive adjective) hay tính từ vị ngữ (predicative adjective).

That house is blue.

That blue house is mine.

(1) Football is an exciting game.

(Bóng đá là một môn chơi kích động)

(2) The excited fans ran out in the streets.

(Các cổ động viên kích động chạy ra đường)

Trong thí dụ (1) game giữ ý nghĩa chủ động, kích thích người khác. Trong thí dụ (2) fans mang ý nghĩa bị động, bị kích thích.
